Most people have no idea how to use the phonetic information in their dictionaries.  People also "hear" what they expect to hear.  For example in a German class I have noticed that most students hear a similar sound at the end of "ich" and "mach".  If they could look at a phonetic transcription they might become more aware of the differences.

This is a plea for the International Phonetic Alphabet to be included as a language.
